It’s Summer Reading Season!
Summer is my FAVORITE season, not just for the warm weather and beach days, but also because of the long swaths of unscheduled time for my favorite pastime: Reading. Every year, I make an ambitious summer reading list so that I can always find something that matches my mood throughout the season. For the last three years, I’ve enjoyed creating the RMG Summer Reading Guide for middle grade readers. This year is our best one yet.
Who is the Summer Reading Guide for?
This guide is best for:
- All parents of kids ages 8-14 (especially homeschooling parents)
- Educators
- Librarians
- Fans of middle grade books
Why you need the RMG Summer Reading Guide
Our Summer Reading Guide is uniquely designed to offer you a wide range of reading options, especially if you love realistic middle grade fiction. I focused on choosing stories that grab readers from the first or second (at most!) chapter, SHORT books, and a healthy mix of lighthearted stories with a dash of touching stories that aren’t sopping sad.
- The guide features books releasing throughout the summer, from April to August. With 30 choices, you’ll be using this list long after summer is over.
- Find NEW books (for your voracious reader and to stay current as an educator) and backlist readalike recommendations
- Explore both buzzy big releases by veteran authors and discover incredible under-the-radar selections
- All the books in the guide are choices I’ve read cover to cover, recommended by an expert who lives and breathes middle grade books (ME!). I read over 200 middle grade books last year and read over 100 in preparation for this guide.
- The guide picks are designed to match curriculum needs with historical, mystery, verse, and realistic fiction
- Get access to an optional Content Notes file with content warnings and additional information you need to know before you purchase
- Receive an audio guide with additional information about each of the 30 releases
What goes into each Summer Reading Guide
Months of intense reading, culling, and selection precede weeks of designing the printable, and hours of writing descriptive copy for each of the 30 books on the guide. I read over 100 books in preparation of this year’s guide. If you’re curious why how I made this year’s selections, listen to the podcast I made about my process.
What’s in this year’s guide?
This year’s guide features 30 middle grade and young adult books (for those 7th and 8th graders) spread across six categories, including historical fiction, adventure, graphic novels, and romances. You’ll also find discussion questions for one of the books on the guide, an interview with author James Ponti, and several extra features like a Summer Reading Guide BINGO!
