Middle grade action and adventure books are so exciting to read. If you enjoy fast-paced stories with heart-stopping action on every page, these are the books for you. I’ve compiled 30 of the top tween adventure books, including some with a touch of mystery and sci-fi. What I’ve left out of this list are fantasy and survival novels. I’m currently working on a list of survival middle grade books which will be up next month!
Not All Heroes follows 11-year-old Zinnia Helinski whose family has recently moved to Maine after the death of her little brother, Wally, from brain cancer. Although, they seem to have moved for a fresh start, Zinnia’s parents aren’t doing much to create new experiences. They haven’t made new friends and they didn’t even say hi to their new neighbors.
Clues to the Universe follows Ro and a boy in her school Benji. In this debut middle grade book told from two points of view, Ro and Benji become lab partners and form a pact to help each other achieve their goals. For Ro, that’s building the rocket she and her dad always meant to build before he died a year ago. And for Benji, it’s not getting a failing grade in science by tacking on to Ro’s science project. But when Benji discovers that a popular comic artist is his estranged father, Ro insists on helping Benji reunite with his father.
Alone is Megan E. Freeman’s debut survival middle-grade novel in verse. It follows 12-year-old Maddie who gets abandoned by some twist of fate when her entire town is mysteriously evacuated. Left alone with no human in sight, she bonds with a Rottweiler named George who is one of many abandoned pets. Soon after, they lose power and then water and Maddie has to fend for herself using a variety of ingenious means and the town resources at her disposal, including an empty library, grocery store, and neighbors’ homes.
Who loves road trips? Road trips always feel like an adventure to me. Now, what books about road trips? I didn’t even realize how much I enjoy this genre until I read these books about road trips. While these books evoke the feeling of a good ol’ road trip, some of them are tearjerkers, others romance, and still others comedy, and even non-fiction.
