Summary: Lola Goes To School
In this next book in the Lola picture book series, Lola’s adventure is school! Lovers of the series already know Lola to be a spunky, book-loving big sister. So, Lola is not afraid to start school. Readers will see Lola preparing for her first day, from picking her outfit to packing her bag, and getting ready in the morning. Lola’s first day is also documented and the book closes after Lola goes home with her mom.
The Good
I LOVED the illustrations in this one — kudos to Rosalind Beardshaw! Lola and all the other characters (especially her mom!) are so cute! Other things I loved about this picture book:
- A protagonist who isn’t nervous about the first day of school. School can be scary for kids in the beginning, but there are so many books about anxious first days of school — this one is refreshingly different.
- A racially diverse group of classmates. Lola is Black and some other kids are Black, Asian, and Caucasian.
- Minimal text that allows the lovely illustrations to shine.

Overall: Lola Goes To School
Lola Goes to School is a cute picture book with a welcome positive message about the first day of school. With a clever, outgoing protagonist, this book is perfect for kids starting school. The beautiful illustrations, minimal text, and racially diverse cast make this picture book a joy to read. I would definitely recommend this addition for all lovers of the Lola series!
